Food is the largest category of landfill waste, contributing to 14.1% of U.S. emissions. By preventing 2.5 million pounds of food from ending up in our landfills, we reduced greenhouse gases by 9.5 million pounds and delivered enough food for 2.1 million meals. Ensuring no good food goes to waste means over $9 million in surplus food is redirected to those in need and kept out of our landfills.

Welcome to
Loaves & Fishes

Every day in Greenville County, perfectly good food is thrown away while thousands of our neighbors struggle to put meals on the table. Loaves & Fishes exists to bridge that gap. Our mission is simple but urgent: to rescue surplus food and deliver it—free of charge—to the local agencies that feed our community.

In the past year alone, we rescued 2.5 million pounds of fresh, healthy food that would otherwise have gone to waste. That food was redistributed to more than 100 partner agencies, including food pantries, homeless shelters, afterschool programs, and low-income housing communities. Each delivery represents a shared commitment to reduce food insecurity and build a stronger, more sustainable Greenville.

Keeping good food out of the landfill doesn’t just fill plates—it protects our planet. Food waste is the single largest contributor to landfills and accounts for 14.1% of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions. By rescuing 2.5 million pounds of food, Loaves & Fishes prevented 9.5 million pounds of greenhouse gases from entering the atmosphere—the equivalent of taking hundreds of cars off the road for a year.

That same effort provided 2.1 million meals to individuals and families across our community—more than $9 million worth of food redirected from waste bins to dinner tables.

As long as there are over 60,000 people in Greenville County facing food insecurity, Loaves & Fishes will be on the road—recovering, redistributing, and reimagining what it means to care for one another. Because in our community, no good food should ever go to waste, and no neighbor should ever go hungry.
